The successful ‘grassroots’ British racing series for Toyota MR2s looks set for another thrilling season of competition, and to gaining an even wider following thanks to the addition of regular TV coverage.
Seven of the championship’s eight race days will be filmed for screening in 30-minute programmes on Europe-wide satellite channel Motors TV. Further footage will be available via a YouTube from series sponsor Millers Oils.
The 750 Motor Club-run Toyota MR2 Championship gets underway next Saturday (23 March) at Donington Park, and will visit all the top circuits in England, as well as Pembrey in Wales. Each meeting will feature two MR2 races.
Forty-nine drivers, many of them track novices, contested the series in 2012 and championship organiser Patrick Mortell is expecting a similar level of competition this season: “All the signs are that we will again enjoy full grids, and the addition of TV coverage will I am sure prove a further draw for competitors.”
Another competitor benefit results from the signing up of a new championship sponsor in the form of suspension component maker Whiteline; the company is to provide a new adjustable camber bolt free to all registered drivers.
As in previous seasons, there will be three classes to cater to all models from the MR2’s production life. Last year’s Class C Champion, Jim Davies, is to return with his Mk III MR2 to defend the title he claimed in his rookie season. “In terms of value for money, nothing can beat the Toyota MR2 Championship,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed my first season and was getting on terms with the Mk II cars towards the end. We are working hard on improving the balance of my MR2, and I have gained a lot of experience, so I am hopeful for even better things in 2013.”
